FAQ

  • Yes it is.

The important thing to remember about our classes and our instructors is that they are extremely supportive. We create a very open and safe environment and community for our students. Your fears and anxiety are normal and healthy. You will find that many of your classmates feel exactly the way you do. Therefore, we make sure that everyone is supported and allowed to express themselves.

  • Absolutely nothing!

You can miss one or even two classes and still have an amazing experience with the 6-week program. This is because you are creating your own personal & original 5 minute set. However you accomplish that is perfectly acceptable. You are not missing the secret formula/ingredient to being funny in any one particular class. The main point to remember is it’s like anything else in life, it comes to how much time and effort you put into the entire 6 weeks. That means doing your homework, listening to your instructor and fellow students when they give you feedback, and possibly even reading a chapter or two of a book that explains joke structure, comedic styles etc. Remember, we do not offer “make up” classes. IF you feel you have missed anything important, please reach out to your teacher and they will be happy to go over anything you missed.

  • We will find you an alternative date. When you take any class that includes a graduation show, you are guaranteed a show. Just e-mail us and alert us to your request.

  • We do offer customized programs. IF someone has never done stand-up comedy. However, we strongly encourage you to take a regular beginner class first. One of the first things you need to do is to find your on stage: Persona, Hook, attitude and or character. A class allows you to do that. It is much harder to find that if you’re trying to write and you don’t know who you are.

  • Yes. It’s called comedy writing bootcamp. It always a great class.

However, since we have multiple instructors teaching our level 1 classes, many people are finding it very beneficial to take all of them. It is extremely helpful to get several working pro comics’ feedback, opinions, and ideas on your set. They will each offer a different perspective that the others didn’t have. Plus, several working pros are using our classes to workshop material instead of going to open mics. They find that the classes function as a more productive alternative than open mics.

  • Yes, all students are allowed to come to ANY New Talent shows for free.

Please NOTE it must be a New Talent show.

  • Yes however, if you’re a total beginner we strongly urge you to take a class before an open mic. For several reasons.

Open mics are often extremely difficult, tough crowds to perform in front of.

Some beginners who are only exposed to open mics can very easily get discouraged from performing. Many open mics have very small crowds packed with comedians who often don’t listen and give little to no feedback. This is where we differ.

If you perform on one of our student graduation shows, you will perform in front of

close to 300 people on the main stage of Gotham Comedy Club. It is important that you get to experience a real crowd so that you can get truly honest feedback on your set.
